Protest Jacket Project: An Exhibition Touring with Dynolwaith
Exhibition on trans activism to tour alongside Leo Drayton's production
Alongside our latest production, Dynolwaith, audiences will have the chance to experience an extraordinary exhibition by North Wales artist Reece Moss Owen, whose work celebrates identity, activism, and community voices. The exhibition will be on display at every tour venue - and we invite you to take part.
About the Artist
Reece is a non-binary artist who works across a variety of mediums, but most loves the vibrancy and immediacy of coloured felt tips. Their art is rooted in emotion and connection, with the aim of sparking reflection, conversation, and joy.
For me, as a young trans person, I’m constantly aware of the challenges faced by trans people todayReece
“But I also believe it’s important to celebrate trans joy. From the protest jackets I’ve created, I hope audiences feel a range of emotions – from sorrow at the attacks on trans rights, to hope and joy at the collective voices that have contributed to this project.”
This exhibition has been made possible thanks to collaborations with:
- GISDA's LGBTQ+ Club
- Trans Intersex Non-binary Network (TINN)
- The Queer Emporium
- Cardiff and Vale College
The Protest Jacket Project
The inspiration for this exhibition came from a line in an early draft of Dynolwaith:
“... to be trans today is to be an activist.”
These words sparked the idea of protest jackets - garments with a long history in LGBTQ+ activism, from the Stonewall riots to the present day. Reece has created three unique jackets that audiences will encounter on tour:
Jacket 1: Artist
A personal expression of Reece’s identity as a Welsh, non-binary artist, and a statement on trans rights and human rights.
Jacket 2: Audience
A jacket for you. Audiences are invited to answer the question: “How do we share the weight?”
Pick up a felt pen and add your response directly to the jacket, or write on a fabric square and pin it on.
Jacket 3: Community
Co-created with local groups through workshops making protest badges, this jacket celebrates the voices of those who are too often unheard.
Get Involved
This exhibition is not just something to view, it’s something to join in with. We encourage all visitors to interact, reflect, and add their voice. Whether through words, drawings, or badges, every contribution helps weave a bigger story of resilience, protest, and joy.
