Carreg Ateb: Vision or Dream?

Something mythical is on the move in North Wales

Ambitious multi-arts project by young people from North Wales in collaboration and partnership with internationally renowned artists

As part of The National Gallery's bicentenary celebration, Frân Wen are working with Mostyn gallery in Llandudno and Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller to present Carreg Ateb: Vision or Dream? - an ambitious project that sees new voices given the platform to re-image the relationship between history, identity and creative imagination.

Inspired by the secret journey of National Gallery paintings hidden underground in a slate mine in Eryri during the Second World War, the project offers young people the opportunity to claim their place within the cultural story of Wales - not through a romantic lens, but through a bold approach that explores transformation, personal expression and their aspirations for tomorrow.

It opens doors to experiment with various creative methods from unexpected live performances to digital and immersive content, turning the incredible landscape of North Wales into a platform for new and imaginative stories.

Art that travels through time and place

The performance will start with a musical and choreographic procession from the mines of Snowdonia to Llandudno, turning our landscapes into live storytelling stages.

The performance will then flow into Mostyn to open the summer show co-curated by Jeremy Deller, and includes commissions by five Welsh artists - Esyllt Angharad Lewis, Gweni Llwyd, Lewis Prosser, Llyr Evans and Sadia Pineda Hameed.

Their work will be shown alongside works from the National Museum of Wales, Llandudno Museum, Storiel Museum, and by Jeremy Deller himself - creating a rich dialogue between the past, the present and what is yet to come.

Unexpected artistic Interventions

Alongside the main performances, Carreg Ateb will spark a series of unexpected artistic interventions across North Wales, together with innovative digital content in the form of short films filmed on location in the dramatic quarries of Eryri - blending the physical and digital worlds in striking new ways.

Known for his groundbreaking work like The Battle of Orgreave and the moving Somme remembrance We're Here Because We're Here, Deller creates experiences that dissolve barriers between art and audience.

Carreg Ateb: Vision or Dream? is part of The Triumph of Art - a series of creative arts events happening across the UK in Dundee, Plymouth, and Derry-Londonderry, with a day-long spectacular grand finale in Trafalgar Square, London on 26 July 2025 where all the projects will come together.

Join us to experience the past reimagined by a new generation - and glimpse the future they’re about to create, one unexpected step at a time.
