Open call for theatre artists ready to change the game

Intensive artist development programme for under 30s takes a new twist to explore new ways of engaging theatre audiences.

Building on the success of last year’s new writing programme, we've teamed up again with Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru, with support from Literature Wales, to develop young artists under 30 who are interested in theatre.

This year we're offering an expanded programme for theatre makers from all disciplines and backgrounds which starts with an intensive residential this May at Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre at Llanystumdwy in North West Wales.

The programme is split into 3 blocks in May, July and August (see full dates below).

Last year we focused on supporting playwrights and we are delighted to have commissioned some of those exciting writers - we look forward to developing their work into full productions over the coming years.

One of the artists who has received a co-commission from Frân Wen and Sherman Theatre, is Nia Morais, 25, who was part of last year’s project.

It gave me an insight into the world of theatre and I learnt a lot about the different ways to write for the stage. It was an amazing education and experience.
Nia Morais

We are super eager to hear from fresh new voices, voices that are currently under-represented in Wales - whether from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, living with disabilities or long-term illness, or low-income backgrounds.

As well as being mentored by Frân Wen and the Eisteddfod, the artists will have the opportunity to work with renowned theatre makers Slung Low and creative curator Marc Rees.

The aim is to encourage artists to venture, experiment and challenge theatre boundaries.
Betsan Moses, Chief Executive of the National Eisteddfod of Wales.
